Tournament Tiers

Your guide to WESPA’s competitive hierarchy.

WESPA events are grouped into five tiers, each reflecting the tournament’s scale, competitiveness, and organisational standards. These tiers are used only for YTD ranking calculations for Scrabble Summit Cup qualification.

Mini

A small tournament with 8–12 games and minimal or optional prizes.

Compact

A mid-sized event of 14+ games with prizes between USD 1,000–2,500.

Standard

A standard tournament with 20+ games and a prize pool of at least USD 2,500.

Major

A large tournament featuring 24+ games and prizes of USD 7,500 or more.

Premier

The top-tier championship with 24+ games and a prize pool of USD 20,000+.

Only OTB (over-the-board) WESPA-rated tournaments with at least 14 games.

Rankings are updated after every eligible tournament and reset annually after the 12-month qualifying period.

Yes! YTD points are awarded per tournament tier and position.

If players are tied on YTD points at the end of the qualifying period, the number of wins is used as the first tiebreaker. If still tied, the player who has played more games during the qualifying period is ranked higher.
